Is crypto anonymous?
No. It is pseudonymous, permanent and public — which is a very different thing, and often less private than cash.
No, and the difference matters. Every transaction on a public chain is visible to anyone, forever, along with the full history of both addresses involved.
Addresses do not carry names. That is where the idea of anonymity comes from. But the moment one address is linked to a person — through an exchange account, a purchase, a donation post, a screenshot — everything that address ever touched becomes attributable, retroactively. There is no way to un-publish it.
This is why analysis firms exist and why exchanges can trace stolen funds across chains. The ledger cooperates with them by design.
The accurate word is pseudonymous: a persistent public identity that is not your name until it is. Cash, by comparison, keeps no record at all.
Can anyone see my wallet balance? covers the practical side.
