Directory

Exchanges, wallets and tools, grouped by what they do. We list, we do not rank — and there is not a single referral code on this page.

Exchanges — global

Convert local currency into crypto and back. All of them verify identity, and none of them is a place to keep funds — a platform is a doorway, not a vault.

Name What it is FoundedJurisdiction
Kraken ↗ Trading since 2011, one of the longest-running exchanges still operating. 2011 United States
Coinbase ↗ Listed on Nasdaq since 2021 and in the S&P 500 since 2025, so it files audited accounts. 2012 United States
Bitstamp ↗ Founded 2011. Acquired by Robinhood in a deal completed June 2025. 2011 Luxembourg
Bitfinex ↗ Long-running exchange with deep order books. Founding year not yet verified here. — British Virgin Islands

OKX ↗ Large exchange with its own wallet and chain. Availability varies by country. — Seychelles

Exchanges — regional

Smaller operators built around one region's banking. Often the cheaper route where they operate, because they connect to local payment rails directly.

Bitvavo ↗ Euro-focused, registered with the Dutch central bank. SEPA rails. — Netherlands

Wallets — desktop

Non-custodial, and listed only where the same wallet runs on both Windows and macOS. Something available on one platform only is a different product, and switching computers later should not mean switching wallets.

Name What it is Runs on
Electrum ↗ Bitcoin only, non-custodial, released 2011. Supports Lightning and hardware wallets. Windows, macOS, Linux
Sparrow ↗ Bitcoin wallet aimed at people who want to see exactly what they are signing. Connects to your own node if you run one. Windows, macOS, Linux

Trezor Suite ↗ The desktop application for Trezor devices. Also works as a watch-only wallet. Windows, macOS, Linux
Ledger Live ↗ The desktop application for Ledger devices. Windows, macOS, Linux

Wallets — mobile

Phone wallets, non-custodial. Convenient, and the key lives on a device that goes everywhere with you — appropriate for spending money rather than savings.

Name What it is Runs on
Trust Wallet ↗ Multi-chain, non-custodial, very widely used. Owned by Binance since 2018. iOS, Android
BlueWallet ↗ Bitcoin and Lightning, open source, long-standing. iOS, Android

Solflare ↗ Solana wallet with staking built in. Also a browser extension. iOS, Android, extension

Wallets — browser extension

These exist to sign transactions on websites, which is also exactly how wallets get drained. Install only from the browser's own store, and keep the balance small.

Name What it is Runs on
MetaMask ↗ The default wallet for Ethereum and EVM networks. Non-custodial; also has a mobile app. Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Edge
Rabby ↗ EVM wallet that simulates a transaction before you sign and shows what it would change. Directly aimed at the blind-signing problem. Chrome, Firefox, Brave

Name What it is Runs on
Trezor ↗ Made by SatoshiLabs in Prague. Firmware is published on GitHub under GPL-3.0, so anyone can audit what the device does. open source firmware
Ledger ↗ Certified secure element; the device operating system is not published. A 2020 breach of its e-commerce database exposed customer contact details, which produced years of targeted phishing. closed OS, secure element
BitBox ↗ Made by Shift Crypto in Zurich since 2015. Open source, with a Bitcoin-only firmware option. open source firmware
Coldcard ↗ Made by Coinkite. Bitcoin only, can be used entirely air-gapped via microSD. air-gapped, Bitcoin only

Blockstream Jade ↗ Bitcoin and Liquid, fully open source, inexpensive. open source, Bitcoin only
Foundation Passport ↗ Bitcoin only, air-gapped by design, open source. air-gapped, Bitcoin only

Block explorers

Read-only windows onto a ledger. Paste a transaction hash or an address and see what actually happened. None of these needs your wallet connected.

Name What it is Runs on
mempool.space ↗ Blocks, transactions and a fee estimator. Open source and can be self-hosted. Bitcoin
Etherscan ↗ The standard Ethereum explorer. Also where you review and revoke token approvals. Ethereum
Solscan ↗ Transactions, tokens and programs on Solana. Solana

Blockchair ↗ One search box across many chains at once. Useful when you are not sure which network a transaction was on. multi-chain

Token and contract checks

Read a token's contract before you buy: who can mint, who can freeze, whether selling is possible. A clean report means "no known trap in the code", not "safe" — the most common loss is insiders selling into you, and no scanner detects that.

Name What it is Runs on

Swaps and DEX front-ends

Trading directly from a wallet. These are the most impersonated addresses in crypto: type them yourself or use your own bookmark, never a link from a chat or an advertisement.

Uniswap ↗ The largest decentralised exchange on Ethereum and EVM networks. Ethereum, EVM
1inch ↗ Aggregator: splits an order across several pools to find a better rate. EVM, multi-chain
Jupiter ↗ The main aggregator on Solana. Routes through the available pools rather than holding its own. Solana
