Quick answer

Is trading crypto just gambling?

Not by definition — but without an edge you can name, the arithmetic is the same and the fees are worse.

The difference between trading and gambling is an edge: a reason your side of the transaction is better than the other side's. Firms with one usually have speed, scale, information or structure.

So the useful question before a trade is not "will this go up". It is "what do I know, or what can I do, that the person on the other side cannot". Sometimes there is an answer — a longer horizon, the ability to sit through a fall they cannot. Often there is not, and the other side is software.

Without an edge, costs decide it. Every trade pays a spread and a fee, and those compound against you regardless of direction.

What makes it worse than a casino in one specific way: leverage means being right about direction and wrong about timing is identical to being wrong.

What trading actually is and what activity costs.
