Quick answer

Can I switch to a different wallet app?

Usually yes, using the same recovery phrase. If the balance looks empty afterwards, it is almost always a settings problem.

Recovery phrases follow a shared standard, so a phrase created in one wallet generally restores in another. Your coins never move during this; the new app simply derives the same keys.

The common scare: you restore correctly and see a valid but empty wallet. Nothing has been lost. One phrase can generate many sets of addresses, and different wallets sometimes default to different sets — the recipe is called the derivation path. Most wallets let you choose it, or offer to scan the standard ones, and the balance appears when the right one is selected.

Before assuming the worst, look up the old wallet's address in a block explorer. If the balance is still sitting there, this is a configuration problem rather than a loss.

Moving between wallets covers the whole procedure, including how to do it without exposing the phrase.
