How to buy crypto in the United Kingdom

Which routes actually work here, what each one costs, and how much verification it asks for. Facts only — we do not rank and we are not paid by anyone on this page.

Ways to buy in the United Kingdom

Verification is described as it is, not as something to avoid. Every route here is legal; they differ in cost, speed and paperwork.

Check a platform in the official register

One register, and one distinction that trips people up: UK crypto firms are registered for money-laundering supervision, not authorised the way a bank or a broker is.

Financial Services Register — cryptoasset firms

Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)

What it covers
UK cryptoasset exchange providers, crypto ATM operators and custodian wallet providers, which must register before doing business.
What it does not prove
The FCA says in terms that registration is not an endorsement and firms must not present it as one. It covers money-laundering controls only. Crypto is outside the UK compensation scheme and outside the ombudsman for most activities, so a registered firm's failure leaves no UK compensation route.
Worth knowing
Registration under money-laundering rules is not the same as full authorisation. A separate authorisation regime is being built and is expected to take effect in 2027; until then essentially every UK crypto firm is registered only.

Being on a register is one box ticked, not a safety rating — it says nothing about solvency or whether your coins are segregated. The rest of the boxes are here.

Notes on United Kingdom

The first thing a British reader will notice is the paperwork before the purchase. Since 8 October 2023, any firm marketing crypto to UK consumers must show a specific risk warning, must assess whether you have the knowledge and experience for it, and must give first-time investors a cooling-off period before you can proceed. Refer-a-friend bonuses are banned outright. If a platform lets you skip all of that, it is not following the rules that apply to serving you.

Machines: there are none you can legally use. The FCA says no crypto ATM operator is registered in the UK, and running one without registration is a criminal offence. The number advertised in the UK fell from more than 80 in 2022 to nil in 2024, and on 28 February 2025 the first person convicted of running an illegal network — more than £2.5 million through the machines — was sentenced to four years. A machine still standing somewhere is not a service that slipped through; it is the offence.

Tax. Crypto is subject to Capital Gains Tax. For 2025-26 the annual exempt amount is £3,000, and gains above it are taxed at 18 per cent for basic rate taxpayers and 24 per cent for higher and additional rate taxpayers. HMRC treats an exchange of one token for another as a disposal in its own right, so a swap creates a gain or loss even though no pounds moved. Its pooling rules also mean you cannot simply pick which coins you sold — they are averaged across a pool, which is the part that catches people reconstructing a year from memory.

Exchange traded notes, and the boundary. Since 8 October 2025 retail investors can buy crypto exchange traded notes, provided they trade on an FCA-approved UK exchange. The ban on selling crypto derivatives to retail investors stays. And these products carry no FSCS protection — if the issuer fails, there is no compensation scheme behind it, which is a different proposition from a bank deposit or a protected investment.

Where people actually buy. Many Britons never open a crypto exchange account at all and buy inside an app they already use, most often Revolut. That is a legitimate route and it is in the table above. The question worth asking of any such app is whether the coins can leave — Revolut does support sending crypto to an external wallet, and not every banking or investing app does. If they cannot leave, you hold exposure to a price rather than the asset itself.

Payments. Faster Payments moves pounds in seconds and is the normal way to fund an account. Some UK banks cap or block payments to crypto platforms outright; that limit comes from your bank rather than from the platform, and it is worth finding out before you plan a purchase around it.

Whatever route you take, finish the same way

Buying is the easy half. Move the coins off the platform to a wallet you control, starting with a test transfer of a few dollars. An exchange is a place to buy, not a place to keep.

How to set up a wallet →

Before you send money anywhere

  • Not support, not a wallet developer, not an exchange, not the company that made your hardware wallet. There is no procedure anywhere that requires it. Anyone who asks is trying to rob you, and that is true without a single exception.
  • Legitimate platforms deduct fees from what they send you. A demand to pay before you can withdraw is the oldest pattern in this industry, and paying it produces a second demand rather than a withdrawal.
  • That code is the last thing standing between somebody and your account. Nobody legitimate needs to hear it, and support will never read it back to you.
